Reading forecast variance without blaming the weather
A practical approach to SaaS forecast variance commentary for finance and growth leadership packs.
Variance notes that say “seasonality” or “pipeline slippage” without a bridge to bookings and recognised revenue train leaders to ignore the page. A useful note lists three quantitative drivers and one qualitative risk, each tied to a chart in the pack.
Separate timing variance (deals closed late) from rate variance (discounting or plan mix). Controllers care which one hits deferred revenue. Growth cares which one changes the outbound motion next month. One paragraph that mixes both will be challenged from both sides of the table.
On retainers, Signalbeaconpoint writes variance commentary against an agreed baseline forecast file, not against memory. If the baseline was never versioned, the first month of the retainer is spent creating that discipline before any chart polish.
